Mabo Day

Image for reconciliation week

Mabo Day is celebrated on June 3rd as part of National Reconciliation Week. It commemorates Eddie Mabo and his fight for Indigenous land rights. On this day in 1992, the High Court of Australia made a historic decision that said Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were the traditional owners of the land, overturning the old idea that Australia belonged to no one - terra nullius - before Europeans arrived. Mabo Day is a time to learn about and respect the history, culture, and rights of Indigenous Australians.

This year’s theme of National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) is ‘Bridging Now to Next’. It urges us to look ahead and continue the push forward towards a more united and respectful nation as past lessons guide us.

  • The Narragunnawali Platform has activities for students to explore the meaning and purpose of this year’s theme Bridging Now to Next.
