Enrolment process
How to enrol
Enrolment into NSW Centre for Effective Reading (NSW CER) is different from other public schools. It involves a referral and placement process. If you believe the specialised reading support may benefit your child, your local school is the first place to start. They will work with you to understand your child’s needs and help you explore the right support options available.
Enrolment into NSW CER is considered when:
● your child has significant and ongoing reading support needs
● this type of specialist support is the most appropriate.
For placement with NSW CER your child's current school must submit an online application. This is done in consultation with the family. A placement panel then reviews the application and makes a recommendation. Should your child be accepted for support from NSW CER, your child will remain enrolled in your local school. NSW CER will partner with your child’s school and support them to deliver the reading intervention for a period of up to 12 months.
- Schools are communicated the outcomes of the panels.
- Schools share the outcomes with families.
- Schools are invited to an online welcome - information session.
- NSW CER liaises with families and schools to organise the student's assessment dates and location.
- NSW CER shares enrolment documentation and pre-assessment questionnaires with schools. Schools assist families and staff to complete the information.
- Families are invited to an online family welcome session.
Students remain enrolled in their home school during the 12 months of support from NSW CER. A shared enrolment occurs with NSW CER to allow consent and communications between schools, families and NSW CER. The intervention takes place at their school. Students are only required to travel for assessments. If travel is difficult for families, this can be discussed and adjustments provided.
