The NSW Centre for Effective Reading (NSW CER) provides a model in which students who demonstrate low progress following evidence-based reading instruction will receive additional support.
Referral information is used to determine the level of support a student requires. A three tiered system of support is available for students and teachers:
Universal indirect support
All NSW primary schools can access information and resources through this website. NSW CER also provides access to online professional learning throughout the year.
Targeted direct support
Targeted assessment and intervention services are available to students attending schools outside the metropolitan zones of Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong.
Students may be allocated for support through hubs located at Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Manly and Westmead. Students may be requested to attend Dubbo, Wagga Wagga or Westmead sites for assessment. Assessments can be provided remotely.
A tertiary level assessment may be offered to some students. This assessment occurs at the Child Development Unit, Westmead Children's Hospital.
