Partner Schools

NSW Centre for Effective Reading (NSW CER) is a tier 3 reading provision for rural and remote schools across NSW. There are currently 993 schools eligible to submit referrals for NSW CER support.

To find out if your school is eligible: email nswcer@det.nsw.edu.au

NSW CER values the collaborative partnership with partner (home) schools. Key partner school components that contribute to the success of the reading intervention are the schools' committment, the key staff involved and the student voice.

Supervising Teachers

All schools are required to allocate a Supervising Teacher to be part of the student's support team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • assisting with communications between NSW CER and families
  • fortnightly communication with NSW CER teacher
  • assisting with meeting organisation between NSW CER, school and family (at the intitial phase and then approximately every 10 weeks)
  • supporting the tutor as required with any clarification of the reading intervention delivery, or with student engagement.

Tutors

Tutors are allocated by Principals and are responsible for providing the daily reading intervention. Tutors are paid staff members and may be teachers, Learning and Support Teachers, Students Learning and Support Officers or other school staff members.

NSW CER teachers provide tutors with the training and materials required for reading intervention delivery.

Tutor responsibilities include:

  • engaging with the student to deliver the reading intervention
  • sharing any concerns or updates with the Supervising Teacher
  • communicating with the Supervising Teacher and NSW CER teacher if further clarification is required for delivering any components of the reading intervention
  • attending any meetings as required.

Class Teachers

Class teachers are also crucial to the success of the reading intervention. Although not usually delivering the reading intervention, class teachers are key supporters of the student as they provide access to the curriculum and teach the student in the required Key Learning Areas.

Classroom teacher roles when partnering with NSW CER include:

  • continuing to provide the student with classroom adjustments to support access to the curriculum
  • liaising with the supervising teacher and tutor to understand the reading intervention and it's impact on student learning and outcomes
  • attend meetings with NSW CER, school and the family to discuss student progress (approximately every 10 weeks)
  • supporting the student with the transition into and out of the classroom for 1:1 reading intervention sessions.
