International Children's Book Day

International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated every year on or around April 2nd to honour the importance of children's literature and to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books while encouraging reading among children worldwide. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, one of the most famous authors of children's fairy tales, whose works have had a lasting impact on literature for young readers. Every year, a different country or organisation takes on the responsibility of organising the global event, and they often select a theme related to children's literature.

The Main Goals of International Children's Book Day:

  1. Promote the Love of Reading: The day aims to inspire children and young people to develop a lifelong love of reading and books.
  2. Celebrate Children's Literature: It highlights the value of children's books in fostering imagination, creativity, and literacy skills. The celebration often involves activities like book fairs, storytelling sessions, and reading events.
  3. Raise Awareness of the Importance of Books for Children: The day is also a reminder of the need to make books more accessible to all children, regardless of their background or location. It emphasizes the role of books in a child's cognitive and emotional development.
  4. Support and Acknowledge Authors and Illustrators: ICBD often highlights the contributions of writers, illustrators, and publishers who dedicate their work to creating quality children's books.

NSW Centre for Effective Reading celebrates this day by sharing their favourite books, and engaging in book trivia. Who knows books?
