Empirical research identifies five big ideas in the teaching reading in the early years.
These are:
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonics
- Vocabulary
- Fluency
- Comprehension.
In addition to these, oral language is also linked to learning to read.
Podcasts developed as part of the project Principals as Literacy Leaders look at the basic skills children need to have in each of the 5 big ideas and in oral language as they learn to read.
These podcasts are available on the Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA) YouTube channel.
