Helping your child with reading at home

Weekends and holidays are great times to keep reading at home with your child. Aim to keep reading fun so you can both enjoy the time together- here are a few tips for what you can do at home.

Finding the right book to read.

One quick tip is the 100 word test – count the first 100 words. If they read more than 15 incorrectly, the book will be too hard. Look for an easier book that they are interested in.

Once you find the right book, take turns to read.  If they get stuck, or read a word incorrectly, here is what you can do:

  • Pause – give them time to think about their mistake. Wait for 5 seconds. They might get to the end of the sentence and realise the error. If they don’t, then you can prompt them.

  • Prompt – Ask them to look at the letters in the word again. Direct them to the part of the word they read incorrectly. After 2 attempts, tell them the word and keep reading.

  • Praise – Make sure you praise them when they read words correctly, self-correct, or read it correctly after you have helped them.

Other things to make it fun can include:

o   Take turns – 1 page for you, ½ page for them

o   Use a small torch, magnifying glass or pointer to follow along with the words

o   Use different voices

o   Act the book out

o   Surprise your child by dressing as one of the characters

o   Where possible, watch the movie afterwards.
